Overview:
We’re looking for a communications professional to join our public affairs team that focuses on intellectual property (IP for short), particularly patents.
It might sound a bit esoteric at first, but, the fact is, America’s founding fathers recognized more than 200 years ago that protecting intellectual property was key to the future of America. And they built in IP protection to the Constitution (you can look it up: U.S. Const. art I, § 8). That’s because intellectual property:
- Is a major driver of our nation’s economic success, contributing over $5 trillion to the U.S. economy every year.
- Gives the U.S. a major competitive edge in the global marketplace, accounting for nearly three quarters, or $775 billion, of all American exports.
- Accounts for nearly half of the private sector jobs, supporting more than 40 million U.S. jobs.
This Senior Account Executive will manage multiple day-to-day client and agency requests across business groups in a dynamic team environment. The ideal candidate will have a track record of technology issues-related initiatives that create awareness and incite action; the ability to manage multiple fast-paced communications cycles with accuracy and discipline; the capability to work successfully in a highly dynamic environment across multiple teams and in concert with multiple decision makers; the ability to be flexible based on a constantly changing business environment; demonstrated experience working with journalists; and experience generating creative and strategic campaign ideas that further business goals.
This job might be a good fit for you if:
- You believe stories that connect with audiences can shift behaviors and change minds.
- You love campaigns and worked on one for a political candidate or to raise awareness on an issue.
- You dig the old Schoolhouse Rock video, “ I’m Just a Bill ”, and are interested in the legislative process.
- You like to read publications like Politico, The Hill, The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, The Washington Post (and sometimes BuzzFeed).
- You believe in the power of integrated communications and want to try new avenues for reaching audiences directly through social and digital channels.
- You believe a picture is worth a thousand words and want to conceive of and help tell stories visually.
Responsibilities:
- Media Relations: Manage significant cycles of media inquiries as well as proactive relationships with key national media/influencers; identify, create and grow relationships with target media/influencers to appropriately engage, pitch and build news stories; and coach junior staff on influencer engagement approaches.
- Stakeholder Engagement: Serve as day-to-day counsel to clients and agency stakeholders, providing strategic and tactical recommendations and anticipating needs; proactively engage on issues and offer solutions; and influence a broad range of stakeholders with diplomacy using knowledge of cross-team activities and current events.
- Strategic Thinking: Develop and lead brainstorming and execution of integrated communications plans aimed at changing perceptions and achieving specific business goals; integrate and gather information across teams, clients and partners as needed for projects, helping ensure that internal and external stakeholders are aligned; offer increased level of analysis and strategic recommendations based on industry knowledge.
- Project Management: Manage high-profile campaigns across diverse teams, providing strategic counsel to clients and colleagues; manage up and educate senior staff on day to day business needs and account health; routinely share knowledge to team and broader agency; and coach and train junior level staff.
- Digital, Social and Broadcast Media: Contribute to the development and execution of integrated digital/social/broadcast campaigns; lead brainstorms to deliver fresh thinking and new approaches; and keep a pulse on new trends in the digital space and socialize with stakeholders in engaging ways.
Qualifications:
- At least 5-6 years of experience in integrated communications, preferably in an agency setting and/or within an applicable industry.
- Minimum of 2 years of experience with corporate image, issues/crisis management and strategic communications across multiple audience segments. Experience working on legislative, regulatory or litigation issues preferred.
- Exceptional media relations background with demonstrated capacity of working with global business and policy press to manage story development.
- Outstanding communications and organizational skills, showing passion for integrated communications strategies, and the ability to multi-task, work in a team environment, and meet deadlines.
- Bachelor’s degree or above preferred in communications, journalism, marketing, English or a related field.
